Randall J. Urban, M.D. was appointed Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, effective June 23, 2005. Dr. Urban holds the Edward Randall and Edward Randall Jr., Distinguished Chair in Internal Medicine and is professor and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. He served as the interim chair of the department from June 2004 to June 2005. Dr. Urban was awarded an M.D. degree from Texas A&M University in 1982, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in 1985. From 1985 to 1987, he completed his fellowship in Endocrinology at the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has received numerous teaching and scientific awards and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He also received the Helen Salyer Anderson Award as the top graduating medical student in his class. He currently holds 2 NIH RO1’s and is also the PI on several foundation grants. His area of research focuses on IGF-I effects on ovarian steroidogenesis, aging and hormonal effects on muscle function, and traumatic brain injury and pituitary dysfunction, to name a few. Dr. Urban is a strong advocate in the development and implementation of diabetes community outreach programs and works tirelessly to promote the diagnosis and management of diabetes through educational initiatives supported by the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Diabetes Center. Dr. Urban is also a member of multiple Scientific Societies, as well as a respected author in the field of Endocrinology with over 140 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts. He is a reviewer for the NIH and serves as a journal manuscript reviewer for several national scientific journals including The New England Journal of Medicine Dr. Urban understands and is dedicated to the missions of UTMB, and has also worked hard in his career to promote a diverse workforce that reflects the diversity of the population we serve. He will work to develop excellence in patient care, education, and research so that the department can partner with Texas communities to treat chronic disease.
