Internal Medicine Clerkship

Randall J. Urban, M.D.

WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE

Internal Medicine has been committed to excellence in teaching, research, and patient care since its founding in 1891. This extraordinary, diverse department consists of ten robust Divisions: cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general medicine, geriatrics, hematology-oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology-hypertension, pulmonary-allergy, and rheumatology. We maintain a strong faculty of over 130 physicians and scientists; train an outstanding housestaff (residents and subspecialty fellows) of about 200, and retain a support staff of over 500 dedicated people. We are the largest clinical Department in the School of Medicine.

Our teaching efforts are nationally recognized for a unique blend of consistency and innovation. Research efforts within the department are strong and expanding vigorously. Patient care extends beyond UTMB’s 13,500 employees and their families to the community and much further. We serve a primary catchment area of 5 contiguous counties and a safety network for vulnerable populations extending across the entire state of Texas.

The housestaff has won first place in national competition based on medical knowledge, sponsored by the American College of Physicians, for the past three years. Internal Medicine's subspecialty training positions are increasingly competitive. Alumni support for Departmental programs is progressively strong.

Located on a subtropical island in the Gulf of Mexico in the shadows of the nation’s fourth largest city, Galveston offers a variety of lifestyles combining easy mobility, a sophisticated diverse culture, and access to major metropolitan amenities.
