Life in Galveston

Call- On ward rotations call is every 5th night (q4 call for subspecialty wards). The on-call ward team accepts admissions until 10 p.m., when the night call team begins accepting admissions. Cross cover duties are passed on to the night team at 10 p.m. There is a cap of 5 admissions per intern on call nights. Call in the CCU and MICU is every 4th night and is overnight call.

Night Call- PGY I and II residents are required to complete two 2-week rotations of night call duty. PGY III residents are required to complete one 2-week block of Night Call. The Night Call team is composed of 3 junior or senior residents and 3 interns. The Night Call Team accepts admissions from 10 PM to 7:30 am. While on Night Call the housestaff have no other inpatient or outpatient responsibilities.

Days Off- While on inpatient ward rotations, all housestaff receive 4 days off per 28-day rotation. Inpatient elective rotations and outpatient clinic rotations are only Monday to Friday.

Hospitalists- We have a very involved Academic Hospitalist group in our program. They assist in the management of patients and are active in resident education.  Educational activities include presenting at multiple conferences throughout the year, precepting in the resident clinic, attending morning report, and others.

Elective- PGY 1 residents receive at least 1 elective and 1 Neurology month.  They may also be assigned to one “lottery” month.  This service provides backup for residents in the case of illness, family emergency or other unforeseen absence.  If not pulled to assist with coverage, this month serves as an additional elective.  PGY 2 residents have 2-3 electives and 1 Lottery month. PGY 3 residents have 3-4 electives and 1 Lottery month.

Team Leader- This is our outpatient clinic month for our PGY 2 and PGY 3 residents. Residents participate in daily clinics with responsibilities of patient follow ups, call backs, medicine refills and other patient care needs. They are also responsible for helping to see walk-in patients, mentoring the PGY-1 residents and ensuring that the clinic flows smoothly. Residents participate in monthly journal clubs and learn the nuances of Primary and Preventive Medicine.
